    BWS SWE will introduce girls to engineering and science by offering engaging hands-on projects and career exploration activities for girls through the Girls Go Techbridge program, Engineers To The Rescue. The projects highlight the Engineering Design Process and invite girls to brainstorm, design, build, test, and re-design. This experience gives girls a flexible, practical approach to problem solving that they can apply to a wide range of subjects. The student will also interact with STEM role model volunteers and explore careers to become inspired.

    Volunteers are needed from 9:00am-3:30pm.

    The event begins promptly at 10:00am and ends at 3:00pm.

    The event begins promptly at 10:00am and ends at 3:00pm.

    $20.00 non-refundable fee per female students will need to be paid to reserve your spot and will be used for supplies and lunch. Financial aid is available for students that need it.

    Please have the Parents/Guardians fill out the Photo Release Form in advance, it will make check in go faster.

    Be part of the fun and volunteer for a fun day at the National Building Museum during Engineers Week!!

     

    What is Family Day @ National Building Museum? The annual Washington DC Engineering Family Day is enjoyed by over six thousand visitors to the National Building Museum every February.  The festival features dozens of hands-on  activities provided by local engineering chapters and national organizations.  Every year at the start of Engineer's Week, the impressive main hall of the National Building Museum is taken over by thousands of children of all ages experiencing the excitement of engineering, not to mention slime. 

     

    The National Building Museum and the National Engineers Week Foundation invite you to debunk the myths of engineering and discover how professional engineers turn an idea into reality.  Celebrate National Engineers Week by participating in this free, hands-on and fun-filled festival! 

     

    Discover Engineering Family Day is a FREE, drop-in program. Program and activities are most appropriate for children ages 5 to 13 with adult supervision. Registration is not required.

     

    What do you do as a volunteer?  SWE BWS partners with AlChE, to run the slime making stations! It is the most popular event at Family Day every year - everyone loves slime!

     

    Slime Making - Each child gets to see how to make slime and understand chemistry! They each get to pick their own color and this gross stuff is a HUGE hit!!

     

    Volunteer Opportunities:

    Food: breakfast (donuts), lunch (pizza) and drinks throughout the day for all volunteers.

     

    Arrival: The National Building Museum is located at 401 F Street NW, between 4th and 5th Streets, across the street from the Judiciary Square Metro (Red Line)Wheelchair access is available through the G Street entrance.

     

    Parking in the area is limited - Ride Metro - another way engineers make our lives easier!

    Come represent BWS-SWE and help prepare meals and serve them to hungry guests at SOME’s Dining Rooms for the Homeless located. Eight (8) of us will help SOME to provide a nourishing, hot lunch on this Sunday afternoon, while getting to know each other.

    About SOME:

    SOME (So Others Might Eat) is an interfaith, community-based organization that exists to help the poor and homeless of our nation’s capital. We meet the immediate daily needs of the people we serve with food, clothing, and health care. We help break the cycle of homelessness by offering services, such as affordable housing, job training, addiction treatment, and counseling, to the poor, the elderly and individuals with mental illness. Each day, SOME is restoring hope and dignity one person at a time. We invite you to join us.

    Directions / Parking:

    Limited parking is available in SOME’s lot that is adjacent to the Dining Room, as well as on the street. We have 13 parking spots labeled ‘Visitor Parking’ for volunteers. If you are not sure please ask one of our staff members.

    The closest Metro station is the New York Avenue (NoMa) station on the red line. SOME is located .5 miles from the station. Head straight on N Street. At the intersection of New York Avenue and North Capitol Street, cross over North Capitol Street, then take a right onto North Capitol Street. Turn left on O Street, NW.

    SOME is located .8 miles from the Mt. Vernon Square/7th Street/Convention Center station on the green line. Head east on M Street, NW. Take a slight left at New York Avenue, NW. Turn left on First Street, NW. Turn right on O Street, NW.

    NOTE:  Limited parking will be available in the lot in front of the Main Entrance; parking will also be available along the street and in the nearby neighborhoods.  Additional information on parking and logistics will be provided  closer to the event.

Judges first have time to review the submissions on their own and then will go back and talk with the young women about their projects. Lunch is generally provided by the school following the judging.

    This is a national event and we will be participating with national SWE.

    SWE will have a booth at the festival and we will be doing the puff mobile activity!

    We hope you can volunteer at the SWE booth for a few hours. We will need approximately 5 volunteers at all times. We are looking for professional and collegiate volunteers!

    Volunteer Shifts:

    There are a variety of shifts and time slots available ranging from 8:30am-6:30pm Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. You can sign up for as many shifts as you are able to support. Each shift is 1-3 hours long. 

    Use this registration for all shifts. You do not need to commit to a shift at this time, you will be able to select your shift later using Volunteer Spot.

    All volunteers will get a green SWE volunteer shirt.
