Benefits of Membership
Networking Opportunities
One of the top benefits that SWE provides according to many of its members is the ability to network with other women engineers. Networking occurs through section meetings, events, and programs and through participation at regional and national conferences. SWE-BWS routinely hosts social networking events either after work or during lunchtime. These are generally informal gatherings to allow members to meet and simply socialize with one another.
Professional Development
Membership in SWE provides women with many opportunities to enhance their careers through professional development activities. Workshops offered at local, regional and national levels cover a wide range of topics from applying for patents to building leadership skills to maintaining a positive work-life balance. SWE-BWS regularly holds seminars and membership meetings with a specific focus on the professional development of its members.
Leadership Development
Members who become involved as officers or committee chairs at all levels of SWE report that the experience develops their leadership skills above and beyond the opportunities they have at work. Many of our members started as section officers or committee chairpersons and today hold Regional and National positions within the SWE organization. SWE-BWS is always looking for new leaders to join our group. We have officer and committee positions with a wide range of responsibilities and time commitments to fit into your busy schedule. If you are interested in getting involved with SWE-BWS, please contact a member of our leadership team for more information.
Outreach Opportunities
SWE members give back to the community in a variety of ways, benefiting them through the satisfaction they receive by helping others. SWE-BWS members are active in their local communities in performing outreach activities, such as Girl Scout Programs and Engineers Week Events, and through our local scholarship program. The SWE-BWS scholarship program provided $5000 in 2007 to outstanding young women pursuing higher education in the field of engineering.
